'The Age of Innocence'.

The Age of Innocence

It’s Scorsese Season by David Stratton at NFSA.

‘The Age of Innocence’ (1993, G).

A starch-collared period tale of social politics amongst the New York well-to-do. The nineteenth century might seem a world apart from Scorsese’s mean streets, but these people are every bit as vicious as they fight for position and profile in an adaptation of Edith Wharton’s classic novel.

Newland Archer (Daniel Day-Lewis) courts the charming May Welland (Winona Ryder) but then courts social disgrace when he falls for the divorcee, Countess Olenska (Michelle Pfeiffer).
