Mount Majura

Mount Majura Nature Reserve is part of the Canberra Nature Park in north Canberra. It is the highest peak of suburban Canberra.

It’s basically a series of remnant bush areas made up of hills and ridges connected by walking tracks and fire trails. You can get to it from Hackett, Watson and the Federal Highway.

The mountain was ‘made’ millions of years ago from some violent volcanic action. The vegetation was formed about 10,000 years ago… In the 1830s, after colonisation, cows were let loose for grazing until quite recently (1985). So the plants you’ll see are actually regrowth. A local group called the Friends of Majura have an obvious and deep love for the reserve and volunteer many hours regenerating the area. They have a web page (from which lots of these facts were gleaned) that is a good place to find more info.
